Right after Krypton is destroyed and Kal El reaches Kansas to become Clark Kent (Henry Cavill), the film slows down to a somber and slowly-paced story about a man hiding from the world. This part of the movie also contains most of the flashbacks that give us a glimpse of Clark's life as a kid, and none of it has any joy to it whatsoever.
Man Of Steel takes Clark and his overall demeanour very seriously, and never once lets up. Humourless as it all gets, it is still highly engaging, save for some bad writing.
With an absolutely pedestrian dialogue that is now a hallmark of writer David Goyer, serving as the backbone, the film plunges into a third act, where General Zod (Michael Shannon), a war criminal from Krypton, arrives on Earth to take Kal El - something that is never in doubt is a bad idea.
As Kal becomes Superman, he also unleashes a series of action set-pieces that have so many buildings totaled, so many railway cars destroyed, and so many lives ostensibly lost, that it feels incredulous that no one thought of the loss they depict.
These action set-pieces are the most incredible ever committed to film. Zack Snyder lets loose from his previous crutches, and does a stellar job of letting us feel heft and geography to the action at hand.
After 2006's Superman Returns, and its real estate scam plot point, this feels like major step up, and it is - the invincible guys punching each other feels dynamic, and suitably threatening for life on Earth.
As long as Snyder doesn't let Goyer's dialogues come from Henry Cavill, the action and spectacle on display wows thoroughly. The emotional heft, obviously, is lacking simply because Cavill, as handsome a figure he cuts in the ol' supersuit, does not exude the charisma or presence of a Christopher Reeve. He's fine, but for the most part, that is how we see Lois, or Perry or any of the other familiar faces from the Superman world. They're all fine, but are second to the spectacle unfolding in front of us. The only exceptions are Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner, both lending gravitas and elegance to the film.
While most other characters suffer from less screen time and a dour film that forces them to be a certain way, the action takes center stage, and delivers. It lacks the emotional punch you'd require of it, but the action is genuinely amazing to behold.
The movie, too, is a microcosm of that - it's a fine film, with great times even, but without a central character that feels like he has genuine motivation and forward drive as a character, it flounders for a long time till the spectacle take over.
And ultimately the spectacle is why we will watch this flawed film again and again - this is simply the best, most mind-meltingly amazing action set to screen in a Superman movie. It is gorgeous to behold, and were it not for the lack of well executed emotional context, it would be a minor classic. As it stands, we have gotten a flawed but almost certainly one of the best, Superman films, and a great summer blockbuster. We now have a Hero we need, but may or may not deserve.

Plot[change | change source]
The planet Krypton faces imminent destruction due to an unstable core, and its ruling council is under the threat of rebel General Zod and his followers. Scientist Jor-El and his wife Lara-El secretly imprint a genetic codex into the cells of their newborn son Kal-El, and launch him on a spacecraft to Earth to preserve the Kryptonian race. After Zod murders Jor-El, he and his followers are banished to the Phantom Zone, but manage to escape when Krypton explodes. The infant Kal-El lands on Earth in Smallville, Kansas, where he is discovered by couple Jonathan and Martha Kent, who name him Clark and raise him as their adopted son.
Clark's Kryptonian physiology affords him superhuman abilities on Earth. Young Clark gradually learns to hone the abilities that initially cause him confusion and discomfort. Jonathan reveals to a teenage Clark that he is an alien, and advises him to not utilize his powers publicly, fearing that society would reject him. After Jonathan's death, an adult Clark spends the next several years living a nomadic lifestyle, working different jobs under false names to cover his tracks and hide his identity. He eventually discovers a Kryptonian scout ship with technology that allows him to communicate with the consciousness of Jor-El in the form of a hologram. Lois Lane, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist from the Daily Planet, also discovers the ship while pursuing a story, and is rescued by Clark when she is injured. Lois's editor Perry White rejects her story of a 'superhuman' rescuer, so she traces Clark back to Smallville with the intention of writing an exposé. After hearing his story, she decides not to reveal his secret.
Detecting the scout ship, Zod travels to Earth where he demands that Kal-El surrender to him, or humanity will suffer the consequences. Clark agrees to surrender to the U.S. military, who hand Lois and Clark over to Zod's second-in-command, Faora. Zod reveals that he intends to use a terraforming 'world engine' to transform Earth into a Krypton-like planet, to eradicate the human population, and to use the codex to repopulate the planet with genetically-engineered Kryptonians. After Clark and Lois escape the ship, Clark defeats Faora and another of Zod's henchmen in Smallville, convincing the military that he is on their side. Zod deploys the world engine and initiates the terraforming in Metropolis and over the Indian Ocean.
Clark, now dubbed 'Superman', stops the world engine in the Indian Ocean. The military uses the spacecraft that brought Superman to Earth in an aerial strike to create a portal that returns Zod's ship and his crew to the Phantom Zone. Only Zod remains, and he and Superman engage each other. After a battle, Superman is forced to kill Zod to save a group of innocent civilians that Zod attempts to murder. Superman decides to blend into the society by wearing eyeglasses, being mild-mannered, and resuming his identity as Clark Kent. He is hired by White to work as a reporter for the Daily Planet

Hans Zimmer denied popular rumors that he would be composing the movie's score.[18] However, in June 2012, it was confirmed that Zimmer would in fact be writing the movie's musical score.[19] To remove any likeness of Man of Steel from the last Superman movies, the iconic 'Superman March' by John Williams was not used in the movie.[20] It is the first Superman movie to do so.[21] Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for Man of Steel was released publicly on June 11, 2013.[22] An unofficial part of the musical score from the third trailer, entitled 'An Ideal of Hope', and confirmed to be a cut down version of the track 'What Are You Going to Do When You Are Not Saving the World?' [23] was released on April 19, 2013.[24] In late April 2013, the official track listing of the two-disc deluxe edition was revealed.[25]

Only five crew members (Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Charles Roven, David S. Goyer, and Hans Zimmer) was part of this movie that had been in The Dark Knight Trilogy. Hans Zimmer composed the music. This movie wias the first Superman movie that did not use John Williams' iconic Superman theme song.[35]
Sequel[change | change source]
The success of Man of Steel made Warner Bros. plans of a cinematic universe featuring other DC Comics characters. In June 2013, it was announced that director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer would both be returning for a Man of Steel sequel, which is being fast tracked by Warner Bros. Goyer had previously signed a three-movie deal, which includes Man of Steel, its sequel, and a Justice League movie featuring Superman. The following month, Snyder confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con International that the sequel to Man of Steel would have Superman and Batman meeting for the first time in a movie.
Cavill, Adams, Lane, and Fishburne will reprise their roles.[36][37] Snyder stated that the movie would take inspiration from the comic The Dark Knight Returns.[38] In August 2013, Ben Affleck was announced to be playing Batman,[9] while Gal Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman in December 2013.[39] Later in December, Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio was hired to rewrite the script, due to Goyer's commitments in other projects.[40]
In January 2014, it was announced that the movie had been delayed from its original July 17, 2015 release date to May 6, 2016,[41] and in May 2014, the movie's title was revealed to be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.[42] The date was moved again to March 25, 2016.[43]

Now that Man of Steelhas overcome divisive critical opinion (read our review) by scoring the biggest June opening weekend ever, talk amongst fanboys and fangirls has inevitably turned to the already in-development sequel (tentatively titled Man of Steel 2), as well as the larger future plans for DC Comics and Warner Bros.' superhero universe - which will (hopefully, maybe) one day culminate with a Justice Leagueteam-up film.
In late 2012 it was announced that Justice League would arrive in 2015 to compete against Marvel's Avengers 2; however, as the success of Man of Steel became more and more clear, the studio's focus shifted from the team-up film to milking their rebooted Superman franchise for all the billions it is likely worth. But today, we have new word that, while focuses may have indeed changed, Justice League and a second Superman movie might be closer linked than anyone thought.
The Wall Street Journalreports that they have inside sources at DC/WB claiming that Man of Steel 2 is being fast-tracked for release in 2014, and that Justice League could follow thereafter in 2015 as originally announced. And while fans caught up in the afterglow of MoS are probably ecstatic to hear this rumor, there are quite a few other people who are going to do a total facepalm when hearing this.
There have been debates about how DC/WB should build its Justice League universe (i.e., do the opposite of Marvel and start with a teamup film early on, or follow Marvel and release standalone character stories), but no matter which approach you agree with, I think every fan of the DC Universe can agree, nobody wants an overly-rushed series of films. And if this rumor holds any weight, it sounds like that's exactly what could be happening. Then again - the rumor is a little hard to believe.
The timing alone would be crazy: director Zack Snyder and writer David S. Goyer - not to mention star Henry Cavill - have literally just finished selling the world on seeing their new Superman vision (and still have some red carpets to walk overseas); the turnaround time from marketing and promoting this first film, filming the sequel, doing months of post-production effects work and then going back out to promote MoS2? Even if it could be done, the quality of that work would be dubious, at best. Snyder himself has recently denied such a timetable exists, and with certain Man of Steel 2 story elements needing to be figured out first, just getting the sequel figured out on paper could take about a year.
A look at Marvel Studios' franchises tells us that the quick turnaround demands of a shared universe can wear down your casts and creative teams. Films like Fast & Furious 7 (which is going through a big director switch due to a rushed production schedule) have fans skeptical about the strategy of altering a working formula for the sake of getting a sequel out quick-fast. DC/WB may want to get a Superman sequel out soon, yes, but they may want to consider the divisive response to the first film and focus on polishing those wrinkles into a superior sequel.
As to the thought of Justice League coming out in 2015: who would direct it? Zack Snyder would be busy with MoS2, and so far his name has been the most likely nomination for the job. Henry Cavill would be near dead from exhaustion if he had to knock out another Superman flick and a Justice League flick in the next two years (see again: Marvel's issues with Robert Downey Jr.) - which is just one more reason why this sounds a little too doubtful to be true.Man of Steel 2 (Last Son of Krypton would be my preferred sequel title) in 2015? Justice League 2016 or 2017? That I would be more inclined to believe - that is, if DC/WB is even interested in moving into a team-up that quickly, instead of trying to launch more multi-million-to-billion-dollar solo character franchises featuring Oscar-caliber talent and proven creative teams (Nolan, Goyer, Snyder).
Don't be surprised if we soon get an official timetable from Warner Bros on the future of their DC Movieverse (Comic-Con is just around the corner, kids); until then, discuss for yourselves how likely or not any of this sounds. Do you still want to see that Batman/Superman movie first?
